You make a lot of salient points, though I think the issue of author signatures, even with your proposed digital variant, kills the deal for me. I've got eight or nine signed books, and I just can't imagine it being nearly as cool to have Chuck Palahniuk sign my kindle as it was when he signed my Russian copy of Fight Club, having never seen a Russian copy before. Something gets lost there.

Also, lots of people lose their jobs if ebooks take over. And it's much more difficult to stare at your beautifully laden bookshelves if everything fits in your back pocket.

The price is also way to high for me. I make $10/hr right now, and will probably be starting an MFA program in August, so I'll have even less money then, and I just can't justify the expense right now. It would take the purchase of about 50-75 ebooks to break even. Which leads me to another issue - used books and used bookstores. Used bookstore owners would pretty much be shit out of luck if ebooks take off. Again, more jobs lost.

The biggest plus for me is the .pdf converter. My wife will be a biology grad student starting August, and she reads a lot of .pdf scientific papers, so this feature would sure save a lot of trees, assuming the graphs and what-not could be converted as well.
