Wonder How Satch Feels?

Last night, Coldplay won the Grammy award for their song “Viva La Vida.” This is the very same song that is the center of a lawsuit by guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani.

Satch claims that Coldplay’s tune is follows too closely with his 2004 song, “If I Could Fly.” In fact, there was some speculation that Satriani’s lawyers would actually serve papers to the British band at the Grammy Awards ceremony. That would have made for some interesting television!

Back when Satriani first made public his intention to pursue legal action against the band, Defamer linked to an interesting comparison of the two songs. See what you think on Defamer’s site…

NPR this morning ran a Grammy story. In it, they played the Satch and Coldplay riffs. They also played a 2002 (i.e., before Satch’s song) from a Argentinian band with a riff that also sounds like the other two. There are only 13 notes you can use. Go figure. i agree with the post above, especially since not only did Coldplay get the award for the song, they were also listed as the writer for the song. I would think anyone who has heard both versions playing side by side (whether by the daytime radio programs or even several of the nighttime talk shows) would agree this was a blantant steal by Coldplay and they should give Satriani his proper writing credit for what they called “their” song. I haven’t heard the Argentinian band cut, so I will not comment there at this point.
