RIP Norman Mailer

Norman Mailer passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 84.

I’m afraid I must admit that I never read a single word of Norman Mailer’s work. It’s one of my darkest bookish secrets, but oh well. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t well-aware of the massive swath he cut in American literature.

Over at The New York Times, Charles McGrath and Michiko Kakutani both provide interesting overviews to the man’s life and work. And in Newseek, Malcom Jones provides a good look at Mailer’s legacy.

man, we should start a club or something. only Mailer I’ve ever read’s one interview, where he said all us young novelists were [I don't know, something bad, that he wouldn't bother reading]. and, while we’re telling secrets, Steve Perry was the best vocalist ever, twice over. and also, Cheetoh’s taste best with ketchup, or when soggy from soaking in Dr Pepper, and I’ve got a stack of American Airlines Sky Malls I don’t know how thick, for when I strike it rich, because I’m buying ALL that stuff.
