When I told everyone to cue up their VCRs for Zinedine Zidane’s final appearance on a soccer field, I had no idea his swan song would turn out the way it did. We’ll never know what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said to elicit such a vicious reaction out of the Zidane, but it was a sad final image for all soccer fans watching the World Cup championship on Sunday. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a more bizarre ending to such a wonderful career. Very odd.
