Shannon may well be the greatest editor since Max Perkins. I think she is.

It's wonderful to see such collective admiration for an editor, and it's too bad Shannon's not taking on any new work since I have a ms. (novella plus stories) entitled THE OLD KLANSMAN that would make a wonderful movie & Algonquin would be the perfect place for it to win some readers. Funny thing (not so funny, really), I've been so busy over the years promoting the works of other writers (i.e., have done a pretty good job of being a pro bono agent) that I've dropped the ball on placing my own best with the best. I don't know how many who write regularly wind up with more unpublished than published works, maybe we should form a club.

Hi Shannon: I am attempting to find an email or physical address where I can send nominations for the Best of the South writing in 2008. I am not able to determine if this award is still available.
Thank you for your help.
I appreciate it.
Best,
Pat Gage

I heard Ms. Ravenel being interviewed today on NPR. She seems so kind and interested in her writers and their work. She also appears to be very human and approachable.. Those are, perhaps, the reasons for her success. Enjoyed the interview!

Can someone tell me how to get in touch with Shannon? I'd like to send her a short story I've written that has been published in an international English society journal. Thanks.

I've had several positive encounters with Shannon, too. Originally I sent her a note expressing how much I loved New Stories from the South--the kind of note I send to all sorts of people, though usually they're authors. A week or two later, the mailman brought me a package which I thought was from my book club. What a surprise when I investigated it more closely and found that Shannon had sent me a stack of books from their upcoming line, not yet released to the public. I felt so special! I sent her a small (not valuable) token in return, and she promptly thanked me for that. I guess after that I began feeling that she and I were real pals, because sometime later I sent her a page from the Atlanta newspaper--I believe it was a review of New Stories coupled with one for Stories from the Blue Moon Cafe, and I made some comments about it. Again she responded quickly with a personal letter. I decided to quit bothering her before I became a pain, but you can be Algonquin will be at the top of my list--IF I ever finish my novel!
